Your questions, answered
Everything learners usually ask before their first lesson. Still not sure about something? Call or WhatsApp 07944 863 228 and I’ll happily talk it through.
I'm looking to start lessons. What is your current availability?
It depends on your area and the days and times you're available.
Call or WhatsApp us, fill out the enquiry form, or request a callback and let us know your postcode, that you're looking for automatic lessons, your usual availability, and whether you're a complete beginner or have had lessons before. We'll then let you know what lesson times we may be able to offer you.
Do you offer automatic or manual driving lessons?
ACG Driving School provides automatic driving lessons. Automatic lessons can be a good option if you want to focus more on road awareness, steering, positioning, planning and decision making without having to manage clutch control and gear changes.
However, if you are looking for manual lessons, please fill out our enquiry form and we can pass your details on to one of our partnered driving schools.
Do I need a provisional driving licence before starting lessons?
Yes. You must have a valid UK provisional driving licence and be 17 years old before you can start driving lessons on public roads. You should also bring your licence to your first lesson.
Do I need to pass my theory test before starting driving lessons?
No. You can start driving lessons before passing your theory test. However, you must pass your theory test before you can book your practical driving test. It is a good idea to start revising early so your theory knowledge supports your practical driving.
How many driving lessons will I need?
There is no exact number of lessons that suits every learner. However, according to the DVSA (Driver and Vehicle Standards Agency), the average is 45 hours of lessons. Everyone learns at a different pace. Progress can depend on consistency, confidence, practice, road awareness, how well feedback is applied and how regularly lessons are taken.
Your instructor will give honest feedback throughout your lessons and help you understand what areas are improving and what still needs work.
How long is each driving lesson?
Lesson lengths may vary depending on the option you choose. Some learners prefer shorter lessons to build confidence gradually, while others prefer longer sessions to cover more topics and gain more practice in one go.
Longer lessons can be useful when working on bigger topics such as roundabouts, dual carriageways, test routes, independent driving or mock tests. It is also important when you do not live close enough to the locations required to teach you.
What happens on my first driving lesson?
Your first lesson is about getting comfortable, understanding your starting point and building confidence. Your instructor will explain the controls, seating position, mirrors and basic safety checks before moving at a pace that suits you.
You are not expected to know everything straight away. Mistakes are part of learning, and your instructor will help you understand what happened and how to improve.
Will I drive on my first lesson?
This depends on your confidence, ability and the road conditions on the day and how well we progress going through our learning pack and folder covering P.O.M, S.C.A.L.P, M.S.M and M.S.P.S.L and how and when to use them depending on junctions and other situations.
Many learners do get some driving practice during their first lesson, but your instructor will only progress when it is safe and suitable to do so.
What areas do you cover?
ACG Driving School provides automatic driving lessons in Nottingham. Availability can depend on your location, lesson times and current pupil demand. Please get in touch with your postcode and preferred availability so we can confirm whether lessons are available in your area.
Can nervous learners book lessons?
Yes. Nervous learners are welcome. Many people feel anxious when learning to drive, especially at the beginning. Lessons are delivered in a calm and supportive way, with clear explanations and time to build confidence properly.
Your instructor will not rush you. The aim is to help you feel more in control, understand the road environment and develop safe driving skills step by step.
Do you offer intensive driving courses?
Yes. Intensive driving courses may be available depending on instructor availability. These are arranged as block bookings, with multiple lessons taken close together over several days or weeks.
An intensive course can help you stay focused, build momentum and remember what you have learned more easily. However, an intensive course does not guarantee that you will be test ready by the end of the course. Becoming test ready depends on how quickly you develop the required skills, apply feedback, build confidence and consistently maintain a safe standard of driving.
Are block bookings available?
Yes. Block bookings are available and can be useful if you want to plan ahead, secure lesson time and keep your learning consistent.
Can I use my own car for lessons?
Lessons are usually carried out in the instructor's car. If you want to use your own vehicle for any specific reason, this would need to be discussed first. The car must be suitable, legal, insured and safe to use for driving lessons.
Can I use the instructor's car for my driving test?
This will depend on your instructor's availability and whether they believe you are ready to take the test safely. Your instructor will only support a test booking when your driving is consistent and at the required standard. Consider booking a mock test with one of our instructors to see if you are test ready.
Can I book a driving test before I am ready?
You can book a test once you have passed your theory test, but it is important not to rush. We are aware that there are issues with finding test dates and some are months away. A driving test should only be taken when you can drive safely and consistently without needing help. If your test is near and you are not test ready yet, consider booking some intensive lessons or moving the date to allow more time to prepare.
Your instructor will provide honest guidance, but the final responsibility for managing your test booking remains with you.
What should I bring to my driving test?
You must bring your UK photocard driving licence. You should also make sure you arrive on time and are using a suitable car for the test. If you do not bring the correct licence, arrive late or the car is not suitable, your test may not go ahead. You may be asked to bring your theory test results.
What happens during the practical driving test?
The practical driving test includes an eyesight check, vehicle safety questions, general driving, independent driving and one reversing exercise. You may also be asked to carry out an emergency stop.
The examiner is looking to see that you can drive safely, make good decisions, respond correctly to road conditions and follow the rules of the road.
What are "show me, tell me" questions?
These are vehicle safety questions asked during the practical driving test. A "tell me" question is usually asked before you start driving, where you explain how you would carry out a safety check. A "show me" question is asked while driving, where you demonstrate how to carry out a safety task safely.
What is the theory test?
The theory test has two parts: multiple choice questions and hazard perception. You need to pass both parts to pass the theory test overall.
The multiple choice section tests your knowledge of road signs, rules, safety, attitude, hazard awareness and driving situations. The hazard perception section tests your ability to spot developing hazards early.
How should I prepare for the theory test?
Start revising early and practise regularly. Do not leave it until the last minute. It helps to use official revision materials, practise mock tests and spend time understanding why answers are correct, not just memorising them.
You should also practise hazard perception clips so you can learn how to spot developing hazards at the right time.
How long does a theory test certificate last?
A theory test pass certificate is valid for two years. You must pass your practical driving test within that time. If it expires before you pass your practical test, you will need to take and pass the theory test again.
What if I fail my theory or practical test?
Failing a test does not mean you cannot drive or that you will never pass. It simply means there are areas that need more work. Your instructor can help you understand what went wrong, rebuild confidence and prepare properly for the next attempt.
Can I have lessons after failing a test?
Yes. Post test lessons can be very helpful. They allow you to work on the areas identified in your test result and improve your confidence before booking another test.
Do you offer refresher lessons?
Yes, refresher lessons may be suitable if you already have a licence but have not driven for a while, feel nervous, have changed to an automatic car or want help with specific skills such as parking, roundabouts or motorway style roads.
