Roundabout lessons in Nottingham
Roundabouts catch a lot of learners out. We break them down step by step on Nottingham's real roundabouts until they feel routine.
Roundabouts are one of the things learners worry about most, and one of the most common places to pick up faults on test. The good news is that they become straightforward once you have a clear routine. We break roundabouts right down and build them up on Nottingham's real roundabouts, until approaching one feels like second nature.
What we work on
We focus on the parts that make roundabouts feel manageable, including:
- Choosing the right lane on approach, and why
- Mirrors, signalling and timing your signals correctly
- Reading the traffic and judging safe gaps
- Holding your lane and position all the way round
- Signalling off and leaving at the right exit
- Multi-lane and spiral roundabouts, and mini-roundabouts
Real Nottingham roundabouts
Rather than practising in theory, we work on the roundabouts you will actually meet around the Colwick side of Nottingham, the very ones used on tests from the Colwick test centre. Most of your practice happens on the A612 (Lady Bay Island, the D&G roundabout and the Colwick Racecourse roundabout), around Riverside Retail Park, on Colliery Way and on the London Road roundabout next to BBC Radio Nottingham. Once you are handling those confidently, we can move on to more advanced locations such as the Valley loop road (the Five Ways roundabout on Edwards Lane and the City Hospital roundabout connecting Hucknall Road), Raleigh Island on Ilkeston Road and even the Nuthall roundabout. In an automatic there is no clutch to worry about, so you can give your full attention to lane choice, observation and timing.
For learners and full licence holders
These lessons suit learners building up to test standard and full licence holders who have lost their confidence on busier junctions. We go at your pace and never push you onto a roundabout before you are ready. There is more about test day on our Colwick test preparation page, linked below.
Common questions
I find roundabouts really stressful. Can you help?
Yes, this is one of the most common worries we hear. We break roundabouts down into a clear, repeatable routine and build up gradually on quieter ones first, so they stop feeling stressful.
Which roundabouts will we practise on?
Mostly the roundabouts on the A612 (Lady Bay Island, the D&G roundabout and the Colwick Racecourse roundabout), those around Riverside Retail Park, on Colliery Way and the London Road roundabout next to BBC Radio Nottingham. Once you have built up a good level of confidence, we may add more advanced locations such as the Five Ways and City Hospital roundabouts on the Valley loop road, Raleigh Island on Ilkeston Road and even the Nuthall roundabout.
Can I book roundabout lessons if I already have a licence?
Yes. We help plenty of full licence holders rebuild their confidence on busier junctions. Refresher lessons can focus entirely on roundabouts if that is what you need.
